Kathryn Hummer Obituary
July 18, 1951 - June 12, 2010
MISHAWAKA - Kathryn G. Hummer of Mishawaka, IN, passed away on Saturday in her home surrounded by her loved ones who are thankful for her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on July 18, 1951, in South Bend, to Richard E. Greulich, who preceded her in death this past January, and his wife, Martha Greulich. Left to cherish her memory is the love of her life, husband, John Hummer of Mishawaka. Her children are son, Brett (Traci) Hummer of Granger; and daughters, Kristen (Dr. Jared) Dhaemers of Granger, Dr. Kathryn (Dr. Jason) Gray of Bloomington and Jennifer Hummer of Mishawaka. Grandchildren include Matthew Dhaemers, Benjamin Dhaemers, Cole Hummer, Parker Gray and Jane Dhaemers. Siblings are Richard (Donna) Greulich Jr. of Glen Ridge, NJ, James (Tracy) Greulich and Cheryl (Gary) Vargo, both of South Bend. Kathy graduated from Ball State University in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in Special Education, and taught for one year at the Ann J. Kellogg School in Battle Creek, MI. She returned to South Bend and married John on June 29, 1974, and furthered her teaching career in the South Bend Community School Corporation while pursuing her master's degree in education at IUSB. She took time off from teaching to devote herself wholeheartedly to her passion in life, which was the nurturing of her children. Kathy lived her entire life with selfless love, always considering others' needs and circumstances before her own. She was ever ready to provide a kind smile, encouragement, and a plate of chocolate chip cookies wherever needed, becoming known throughout the community as the Cookie Mom. Always wishing others to succeed, she continued her teaching interests throughout life, which included piano lessons, English as a Second Language, nursery school, and children's Sunday School at Trinity Evangelical Free Church where she was a member for over 30 years. She also served as executive director of the PHM Educational Foundation, and on the board for the Penn Booster Club. Kathy was an excellent writer, an avid reader, and enjoyed her daily morning walks, nature, politics, and family trips to Disney World. Her five grandchildren adored her, and were blessed by her ability to make play time with Grammie a treasured experience. Kathy's sweet spirit and tender heart will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 16th, in Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Miami Road, with Rev. Craig Clapper officiating. Private family interment services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-8:00 p.m. today, June 15, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for Pancreatic Cancer Research, payable to Johns Hopkins University, and sent to Ralph H. Hruban, MD, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, 401 N. Broadway, Weinberg 2242, Baltimore, MD 21231-2410. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
