Craig I. Haenes, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old.
He was born September 4, 1947, in South Bend, a son of the late Charles & Fern (Bolenbaugh) Haenes and was a 1966 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School. He later received an associate in arts from Kemper Military School and College in 1968, his BA in Science in 1970 from Butler University, and his MA in Education from Indiana University.
Craig was employed by the South Bend Community School Corp. He served as a teacher for 24 years, and as Principal for 17 years, having worked at Marshall, Hamilton, and Hay Elementary Schools.
Craig often said that after waiting so many years for a wife, the Lord blessed him not only with the “Love of his life” but gave him four wonderful stepchildren and fifteen amazing grandchildren. On June 7, 2014, at Community Baptist Church, South Bend, Craig was united in marriage to Kathy Spence Sonnenberg who survives.
Also surviving are his brother Phil & Cassidy Haenes of South Bend, his niece, Candice Wasmer of South Bend; his stepchildren, Philip (Sarah) Sonnenberg of LaPorte, IN; Michelle (Mike) Hogberg of Westfield, IN; and Valerie (Jacob) Busick of Shrewsbury, PA.
He was a member of Graceway Church of Michiana, and Gideons International. He served on the board of Luvability Ministries from 2016-2019 and was a member of Centre Township Volunteer Fire Dept. from 1968-1975 where he served as Captain for a couple of years.
Preceding Craig in death are his parents, his sister, Victoria Samora in 2007, his niece, Camila Eggers in 2019, and stepson, David Sonnenberg on July 14, 2024. Craig will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Family and friends will gather from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Palmer Funeral Home within the Palmer Community Complex, 601 North Michigan St., Lakeville, IN.
Services celebrating the life of Craig Haenes will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Community Baptist Church, 5715 Miami Rd., South Bend, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Pastor Dave Wetterlund will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
