Darrell Keith Mays, 59 of South Bend, IN passed away on October 3, 2024 in Kokomo, IN at home. He was born January 23, 1965 in South Bend, IN to Velma James and Lawrence Mays. Darrell attended South Bend Community School. He worked as a skilled detailer, a food service dishwasher and other miscellaneous jobs as well. Darrell Loved Dancing, Singing, and listening to music. Darrell had very good sportsmanship in basketball, football and track while at Riley High School where he graduated. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His intelligence, humor, smile and most of all personality would light up a room of laughs, laughter and joy.
Darrell was proceeded in death by his parents: Velma Traylor and Lawrence Mays. His paternal grandparents: Ernest Sr. and Ollie Mae James, Shirley and Fred Umble, an uncle Earnest James Jr., two Aunts: Verna & Helen James, two brothers Brian Umble and Anthony Walker and two cousins: Lamar James & Tyshon Lamar Dotson. He leaves to cherish his memories five children: Tiffany Mays, Tasha (TAD) Hughlett of Indianapolis, IN, Darrell Mays Jr. and Dominique Mays both of South Bend, IN, Special Son Ramon Lenoir (Melanie Brazier) two additional children: Tamara & Desmond Smith (Tia Smith). Five Sisters: Kimberly James of South Bend, IN, Tracey Smith of Dallas, Tx, Umekia (Leon) Johnson, Regina Lottie of California, Donyele (James) Gladney of South Bend, In. Three Brothers Garry (Monique) Ward of Virginia, and Terrence Agnew of South Bend, IN. Six Aunts Vanessa Umble of Bolingbrook, ILL, Marjorie (Skip) Henderson, Patricia (Andre)Williams, Sharon James of South Bend, IN, Juiaine James of North Carolina, and Shaina James of South Bend, IN.
Darrell will greatly be missed by Special nephew Bernard (Dude) Johnson Jr.; Five Special Cousins Willie T Sauls, Arsenio (Ebony) Smith, Lashonda, Charlotte James, Nyoaka Boyd, Anthony and Marvln James. Two uncles that were special Emanuel and Sedrick Neely. 12 grandchildren and 17 nieces and nephews, Special Niece Tynisha L. Johnson. Darrell was full of Laughter…his favorite saying was “If yo head is nappy D. Mays will make you Happy.” A special Cousin Robert Deshawn James (Chop) will always be remembered for the things that he enjoyed: His Cadillac cars, comedy, R. Kelly R&B. Those who knew him knew his well. Rest easy D. Mays will be missed and never forgotten.
A Memorial Service will take place in his honor 10AM Friday October 11, 2024at Laymen Chapel CME Church.
