Dec.6, 1959 – Dec.5, 2010 SOUTH BEND — Kevin M.Kowalski, 50, of South Bend, IN, was called home to God’s Glory and Redemption after passing away in his home on Sunday, December 5, 2010, just a day before his birthday. Kevin was born on December 6th, 1959, in South Bend, to John S. and Veta Kowalski. He graduated in 1977 from Riley High School and later attended Ivy Tech, where he learned a great deal in the mechanical trades. Kevin started work, as did many of his friends and family, at the old Cush-Mat plant in South Bend, and moved on to hold many different positions at Curtis Products.Kevin worked as a supervisor at Schnee- Morehead, and later worked for H&H Heating & Air. Kevin always enjoyed working with his hands, and was happy to help with whatever anyone needed fixing.
Kevin lived for and loved his NASCAR, and counted the #24 of Jeff Gordon as his all-time favorite. He enjoyed other sports as well and attended games when he could, and always rooted hard for the Cubs, Da Bears, Colts, and the Irish. Kevin enjoyed bowling at the old St.A’s and at PNA, where he bowled with and against his Dad and broth- ers.He also enjoyed fishing, and often spoke fondly of the family vacations to the UP, and to Minnesota where he had the dubious memory of hitting a black bear on his first real road trip! Kevin enjoyed taking walks with his dog, Henry, who left us just a couple weeks earlier to explore God’s Kingdom and faithfully await his master. Kevin left us to do some fishing with his Dad, John S. Kowalski, who preceded us on his own heavenly journey on July 22, 2008.
Kevin is survived by and leaves behind to fondly recall his memory his longtime love and closest friend, Nancy Freitag of South Bend; his Mom, Veta Kowalski of Mishawaka; his sisters, Cindi Sanchez of Mishawaka and Kari (Harold) Hough of North Liberty; his brothers, John M (Donna) Kowalski of Culver, IN, and Greg (Cynthia) Kowalski of South Bend; his step-sister, Janice Jackson of North Liberty; and his extended family through Nancy:daughters, Melanie (Chris) Chavous of North Augusta, SC, Erica (Ryan) Kelly of South Bend, son, Herm (Tami) Freitag III of South Bend, grandchildren, Olivia, Lauren and Jenna Kelly, Mallorie and Meghan Freitag, and CJ Chavous.
