Mary Elizabeth (Mangum) Mayes

January 20, 1932 ~ January 19, 2025      92 Years Old

On January 19, 2025, Mary Elizabeth Mayes, one day shy of her 93rd birthday, closed her eyes and escaped the frigid cold of Mishawaka, lndiana. Being the ever mannerly and gentle southern lady she was, she waited until  her first two-born grandchildren had just celebrated their half century birthdays to quietly slip away. Mary was never one to put a damper on a celebration!

Mary was born on January 20, 1932, in Tyronza, Arkansas to Arienda Elizabeth “Lizzie” Gibbs and James E Mangum. She was the youngest of the nine children born to Lizzie. Her siblings included Jones, Marvin, Clarence, Don, Dorothy, Barbara, and Rebel  Charlie Price along with Carolla ''Tex'' Mangum who all proceeded her in death.

As a young girl, her family migrated North for employment, settling in the South Bend area. Mary attended Riley High School and was later employed by Ball Band until it’s closing.

Mary married Chuck Hartman, the father of her daughter Carla (Hartman) Myers and later the love of her life Harold ''Hooter'' Mayes, the father of her son Keith Mayes (his wife Michele recently deceased).

Mary enjoyed everything about life with her family and friends in Mishawaka and at Dewart Lake filling her days with bowling, painting, fishing, writing and gardening and never missed the opportunity to sit with her bare legs in the sun. Hooter passed away on December 5, 2018, leaving her to navigate life independently. She missed him the remainder of her days.

Mary leaves her two children Carla (Mark) Myers and Harold ''Keith'' Mayes, both of South Bend. She was blessed with four grandchildren, Jason Mark (Dawn) Skene, Johanna Sue (Adam) Quam, Kelly Jo (Michael) Weiss and Tracy Elizabeth Myers. She was further blessed with great-grandchildren, Dominic (Kylie) Esposito, Taelor Elizabeth (Joe) Foley, Zoie Quam, Layla Weiss, Magnolia Weiss, Lucille Rose Skene, Crosby Weiss, and Ben Weiss. She delighted in meeting her great-great-grandchildren, Alexander Foley, Jacob Esposito and Clementine Elizabeth Foley. Mary also leaves many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory, including Garrett C. Mangum who she had a very deep and special relationship with.

The family would like to thank Risa Steinkraus of Caring Junction along with her staff for the loving care they provided and to the staff of Ascent Hospice for their level of dignity in Mary's last days.

According to Mary's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. A Celebration of Life is being planned on the weekend of Mother’s Day 2025 in South Bend, Indiana.

In her memory, love your family, plant a garden, sit long in the sun and dance up a storm!
