SOUTH BEND - Thomas J. DeShone , 64, of Finch Drive, died at 10:22 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital after an illness. Mr. DeShone retired in 1991 from the South Bend Community School Corp. as a music teacher and band director. He was born July 13, 1930, in Elkhart and lived in South Bend since 1960, coming from Monon, Ind.

On June 16, 1951, in Elkhart, he married Bette Whaley. She survives with three daughters, Becky Lord of Markleville, Ind., Susan Brubaker of Hagerstown, Ind., and Kelly Rogers of Collierville, Tenn.; a son, Thomas H. of South Bend; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Rockwell of Osceola; and two brothers, Jack and Harry, both of Elkhart.

He was a graduate of Northwestern University and taught in Plymouth, Ill., Monon, and at the former Greene Township High School, the former Jackson High School and Riley High School. He was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral, American School Band Directors Association, National Band Association, National Education Association and Indiana State Teachers Association.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Kaniewski Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Thomas DeShone Riley High School Band Memorial Fund, in care of SBCSC, 635 S. Main St., South Bend, IN
