Lawrence E. Sr. Dietl

Lawrence "Larry" E. Dietl, Sr.

September 20, 1941 ~ May 3, 2025

Lawrence E. Dietl, Sr., 83 years old, passed away at 7:43 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.  Larry was born on September 20, 1941 in South Bend to the late Richard E. and Kathleen (Walter) Dietl.  He has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend.  On June 15, 1985 in South Bend, Larry and Sue Wolf were united in marriage.

Along with Sue, his loving wife of 39 years, Larry is survived by five children, Lawrence (Lori) Dietl of Plymouth, Shawn Dietl of South Bend, Michael (Cathy) Dietl of Bremen, Lisa (Steve) Driver of South Bend and Chris Dietl of Ft. Wayne; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly.  Larry is also survived by his two sisters and two brothers, Nancy (the late Doyle) Weaver of Edwardsburg, Norma (Ora) Lane of Mishawaka, Jerry (Bonnie) Dietl and Richard (Ann) Dietl, both of South Bend.  Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Charles.

Larry retired in 2005 from the University of Notre Dame in landscape services.  Through the years, Larry enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and golfing with his buddies.  He also had a great time camping, fishing, and spending summers at the Gravel Lake family cottage.  He was an avid Notre Dame fan and loved attending games as well as watching Notre Dame football and basketball at home.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Larry’s favorite place to be was in the living room with the love of his life, Sue, at his side. While he watched the game, she would work on her Sudoku or word find puzzles.  It didn’t matter what they were doing-what mattered was that they were together.  Their quiet companionship was a beautiful reflection of the deep love and bond they shared.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend.  Sharing of memories will begin at 5:00 p.m.   A private burial will take place at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Lawrence E. Dietl, Sr. may be donated to Center for Hospice, 501 Comfort Drive, Mishawaka, IN  46545.  Online condolences may be offered to Larry’s family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
