Erwin P. (Sam) Wegner

Erwin P. (Sam) Wegner, 62, longtime high school football coach, teacher and administrator, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the longtime football coach at Washington High School and later served as athletic director and a teacher at both Riley and Jackson high schools. He also had been director of the school corporation's adult evening education program at the former Central High School.
He retired from the South Bend Community School Corp. in June 1976. He had lived for many years at 1127 E. Ewing. Wegner was born on March 17, 1914, in South Bend and had lived here all his life.
In 1939 he married the former Esther Lyczynski, who died in 1962. In 1963, he married the former Margaret. J. LeCouteur, who survives, along with two sons, Patrick A. of Fullerton, Calif., and J. Michael of South Bend; a stepson, Edward J. LeCouteur of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. James R. Alexander of Waterville, Maine; seven grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Ziolkowski, Mrs. Loretta Kadulski, Mrs. Aurelia Wilmering and Mrs. Theresa Howard, all of South Bend.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew Cathedral, Most Rev. Joseph R. Crowley, rector, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 pm. today and 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the athletic fund of the South Bend Community School Corp. or St. Matthew Cathedral. Wegner was a member of the Breezers Club.
